JCREW Factory Store Online Opens

My inbox was abuzz this morning with news of JCREW's newest venture - opening up their Factory Store Online - but opening on weekends only. It's a website, isn't it easy for it to be open all the time? Yes. . .but that would not make it is exciting now would it?

I've popped into the JCREW Factory Store from time to time when I'm up that way, as most of them are usually off the beaten path. . .and have always been rather disappointed. I've found that the pricing isn't really that great, and the clothing isn't made as well as it's pricey partner.

Many of you might already know, but JCREW Factory is not just last seasons JCREW on sale, it is cheaper replica's of JCREW favorites that are mass produced to be sold exclusively at the JCREW Factory. This means not only cheaper materials, but also poor fit.

This is not to say I write the Factory Store off completely, from time to time I have found a great swimsuit or coat on sale, or found a silk top that I had yearned for at JCREW before it was discontinued. . .but more often than not they don't have the correct sizing either.

So now onto the Factory Store Online - I must say I was rather disappointed. It wasn't even cheaper than JCREW's sale! I found a shirt on there (the tissue tiers tank), which I purchased at JCREW in July on sale for around $15, it's on the Factory Store for $26, in the same exact color!

Both blouses are the Kelsey ruffle blouse - now the one on sale at JCREW Online are more of summer colors, but with a blouse like this there is nothing wrong with buying off season, it will come back around in spring. Or you can match it with dark cardigans for fall.

The one from the Factory Store Online comes in more fall related colors, but is actually MORE expensive than it's better made counterpart at JCREW.

I did see a few cute jewelry items all under $20, which would be worth purchasing, but other than that I was left underwhelmed by the Factory Store, and when I'm looking for a deal from JCREW I'll stick to their Final Sale.

After a busy and exciting summer I am back from an extended hiatus from blogging. No matter how hard I try, it seems that the summer months tend to get away from me and like the French, I take a vacation from my blog.

This summer has given me some time to reflect on the direction that I am going, and the direction that I want for this blog. I knew when I came up with the name, The Style Maison, that it was style, and not fashion I wanted the emphasis to be on. It started out as a fashion blog, however, I have made a decision to now include all things fabulous and stylish.

Some days this may mean a stylish bridal shower, others it might be serving dinner in style - the root of the blog will most likely remain fashion, but you will begin to see a lot more lifestyle content show up.

I am also working on changing up the layout a little bit. These changes will take place over the next few weeks, so please continue to check back to see the new and improved format.

I also wanted to announce an exciting new venture for me, I am now one of the writers for AskMissA.com - a national lifestyle e-magazine that provides heartfelt rather than commercial content for women's well-rounded lifestyle interests: cultural, political, and social issues; art and literature; design and entertaining; style and skincare.

The long awaited premier of Sex and the City 2 finally came Thursday night, and for a select few, Wednesday night. (Photo's and Details from the SATC2 Pre-screening Premier at The Bridal Bar to come!) I was so busy with the premier party and family in town that I haven't had the chance to see the movie yet. . .however, I have heard some interesting reviews.

One thing that SATC never fails to deliver is amazing fashion inspiration. Thanks to wardrobe stylist Patricia Fields, each character has their own unique personal style, which is expressed through over the top fashions.

A few rules to follow when donning a white frock:

2. If you think it might be too see through, it is - and there is nothing that cheapens a look faster. Easily solve this problem with pant pockets by having them cut out and sewn shut.

3. Keep it crisp and wrinkle free. Be-friend your dry cleaners.

4. Get a tan. . .but not a fake one. Self tanner + White = potentially embarrassing situation. If you have fair skin, wait until a little later in the season and be sure to sweep some bronzer on your cheeks, collar bone and shoulders.

The days are getting longer and the weather is heating up. . .to me this means one thing: Spring Dresses! After months of winter full of dark colors and heavy clothing I anxiously await those first few warm spring days when I can step out sans tights in a floaty spring dress. In honor of the warming weather and impending Easter, I am dedicating this week to dresses. Each day I will highlight some of my favorite dress choices this season for a variety of needs. Then check back next week to see how I turn some of my favorites into an entire outfit!

Today I will start with dresses for work. With more and more offices turning to a more casual look, women have a much larger selection of clothing to choose from for the office. It is important, though, no matter how casual your office might be that you do remain work appropriate. This can be done through choosing appropriate fabrics, fit and cut.

In honor of St. Patrick's day I thought I would continue with a post celebrating the color green. Whether celebrating St. Patty's, or just wanting to add a splash of color to an ensemble, jewelry is a perfect way to brighten up your look. The Glamourous Life

Hollywood came alive Sunday night with remarkable creations from some of the worlds leading fashion designers. The average ensemble from head to toe on Oscar night is valued anywhere from $117,000 into the millions, though most of the gowns and jewelry worn for the red carpet is borrowed.

So who got it right, and who missed their mark? My favorite gown of the evening was Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta. The glitzy and floaty creation was a change from Cameron's normal tight or short numbers, and it was dazzling. Honorable mentions also go to Sandra Bullock, Queen Latifah, Meryl Streep and Miley Cyrus (who needed to stand up straight).

Although Miley is often criticized for dressing too old for her age, I have to say that I much prefer this to the like of teeny bopper Brittany Spears who more often than not showed up on the red carpet sporting not much more than lingerie.

And now for the disappointments: Although, sadly, there was no one whose ensemble was just over the top ridiculous this year, there were several gowns that fell short. Carrie Mulligan in Prada and Charlize Theron in Dior tie for worst dressed. Up close, Carrie Mulligan's "sequins and sparkle" were really miniature forks and knives, which don't have much place on the red carpet.

Also deserving a worst dressed mention are Amanda Seyfried and Diane Kruger. Kate Winslet and Kathryn Bigelow aren't quite worst dressed, but did wear gowns that were quite underwhelming.

SO, now that you’ve made the resolution to get in shape it’s time to find the correct apparel to do so in. For this portion I turned to the experts at Big Peach Running Co, who know everything there is to know about running gear!

Big Bird at the State of the Union?

Who knew that Hillary Clinton would be such a trend setter on Capitol Hill? Famous for her collection of yellow suits, it seems that although Hilary was nowhere to be found, her suits did make an attendance at Tuesday nights State of the Union Address.

While I applaud the women of DC for attempting to break out of the uniform of a black or navy suit, with pantyhose and closed toe pumps, no one ever suggested that canary yellow was the answer. A boring, boxy suit in yellow, or even purple or red for that matter, is still no more flattering than a black one.

I can admit that their are still many careers that require a polished, professional suit to be worn, but fashion designers have become wise to this and created many figure flattering, detailed suits that are still somewhat fashionable. So, women of Capitol Hill, in a city that is quickly turning into a fashion focused one, please heed this advice and invest in some of the suits pictured below.

Suit Tips:

1. Suit jackets should hit no lower than your hips. Anything longer is reminiscent of the suits worn by Lisa Turtle on 90's sitcom "Saved by the Bell."

2. If you are petite, a cropped jacket that is a little shorter in length will lengthen your leg line, making you appear taller.

3. A swing jacket is a great alternative to your standard blazer, and adds interest to an otherwise boring suit.

4. Look for suits that "nip in" at the waist to give you more shape.

5. Consider purchasing suit separates, they often have a better fit, and you can mix and match pieces together, creating a more modern take on the suit.

6. When wearing a neutral suit add a pop of color with a silk blouse or button up shirt.

7. If you are busty a 3-button jacket it the best option for you, anyone else will be more flattering in 2- and 1-button jackets.

8. If you must wear stockings with your skirts please DO NOT wear sheer panty hose in tan, white, or any other light color. Instead opt for an opaque tight, or a black sheer or patterned pantyhose.

A Toast to Taupe

In the past few seasons, nail color has been just as important as any other fashion element. In '06 there was the gothic movement with shades of black, then '08 brought a slew of neon nails in electric pinks, yellows and oranges. Most recently for '09 was a surprising twist with an unexpected shade of jade green.

It's time to get sophisticated with this year grown up shade of taupe polish, the perfect compliment to springs subtle neutrals, pretty pastels and soft tones. Taupe has a way of blending in to any outfit, while still adding an element of sophistication, more than, say, the basic light pink polish.

As with most nail polish trends, this one debuted on Chanel's Spring 2010 runway show, with models showing of this mushroom-y shade. Other nail polish brands have taken note, and now there are variety of options to chose from.

Pantone is the world leader for colors, not just for fashion, but for graphic design and interiors as well. Fashion designers use Pantone's color system to specify colors they use in their collection. Each season Pantone releases color swatches of the selected colors for the upcoming season.

From Pantone comes the color forcast for Spring/Summer 2010:

Designers bring splashes of sunshine to the runway for spring 2010. Vibrant brights add a sense of excitement to the color palette, while practical neutrals provide a safety net for cautious consumers.

“Now more than ever, women are vigilant when it comes to spending,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Instead of reinventing their wardrobe at the start of each season, consumers want pieces to complement what they already own. Pairing a bold color with a basic piece or freshening up their look with bright accents addresses the need for practicality, as well as fun.”

Spring and summer naturally evoke feelings of calm ocean waters and tranquil beach vacations in cool, vibrant, tropical Turquoise. This soothing hue from the blue-green family conjures feelings of escape, especially when paired with Amparo Blue. Yellow has made its mark on fashion and spring will further this trend with gleaming Aurora. Reminiscent of the first glimpse of yellow as the sun begins to rise over the horizon, this shimmering, slightly greenish yellow adds a bold infusion.

Energy continues to surge throughout the warmer hues of spring, leading to provocative Fusion Coral. This inviting orange connects directly to tangy Tomato Purée, this season’s classic red. Pair it with Turquoise for a retro look.

Thoughtful, cautious neutrals provide a dependable backbone to the brights of spring. Kick back and enjoy the bubbly luxury of Pink Champagne. This delicate, wispy tint is the season’s newest neutral. The melding of Pink Champagne, Tomato Purée and Amparo Blue is a refreshing take on the classic springtime combination of red, white and blue.

While many parts of the country are experiencing the lowest temperatures in decades, it is already time to look ahead towards Spring fashions. In fact, the fashion industry has already turned it's eyes towards Fall fashion. . .giving new meaning to the phrase "that's so last year".

So what does Spring fashion hold for us? What trends will linger, and what new trends will surface? Keep reading below to find my 10 trends for Spring 2010. Then continue to check back weekly to find each trend explored in more depth with examples of my favorite finds.

10 Trend for Spring 2010

1. Lusty Lingerie - Lingerie isn't just for the bedroom. . .this sassy trend makes it appearance every few years, but it takes careful planning to pull of the underwear as outerwear trend.

2. Peek-A-Boo - Perfectly placed cut-outs, mesh and sheer fabrics dominated runways, making for a PG-rated peep show.

3. Short Shorts - just when we thought hemlines couldn't get any shorter. . .they did. Now more than ever it is crucial to hit the gym and get those gams ready for short season.

4. Metallics- Sequins, paillettes and metallic sheen are on the menu for spring. Careful of quality to keep this look luxe instead of cheap.

5. Structured Ruffles - This girly trend has been one that keeps finding it's spot in fashion. This season look for more controlled, manicured ruffles.

6. Feathers - Another trend from fall, feathers make a bigger splash this season. Wear with care to avoid adding bulk to areas that might not need it.

7. Jewelry, Jewelry, Jewelry - The perfect, easy way to update any ensemble, bigger and bolder jewelry can make the simplest of outfits stand out.

8. Slouchy Trousers - High-waisted, belted and loose is the way to wear pants for Spring. Gauzy fabrics give this look movement.

As 2009 comes to an end, I thought I would leave you with wishes of Louboutin's dancing in your head. The below Louboutin's are by far the most drool-worthy pair I've found to date. Rodarte for Target - Released EARLY!

I'm not typically one to gush over Target's designer collaborations, however, the Rodarte collection is an exception. And, much to my surprise, they have released the collection in stores a day EARLY! These pieces are sure to sell out, so scoot over to Target quickly to see the pieces.

I had a chance to swing by and I LOVE the collection. Everything from the detailing, closures, and even the tag are high quality. My favorite pieces are three dresses in black, gold and light blue that combine elements of silk camisole's with floaty tulle. If you are anything like me, you have an abundance of cocktail dresses hanging in the back of your closet collecting dust. You also are probably on the hunt for the perfect dress for the holidays and New Years Eve. It's not that you don't like the cocktail dresses you already own, it's that you have already worn them, maybe on multiple occasions. Unlike shoes or a sweater, cocktail dresses are one of those items that you only get a handful of uses out of.

Enter Rent the Runway. For a fraction of the price of buying a new dress, Rent the Runway allows you to rent designer dresses to wear for an event! Stocked with the season hottest designer dresses, members can rent a dress costing upwards of $500 or more for just $50-$200, depending on the dress.

You can search by categories such as: New Years Eve, Meet the Parents and Date Night. Stylists are also on call to help with sizing decisions and suggestions on how to accessorize your look.

Unlike popular bag rental site, Bag Borrow or Steal, I find Rent the Runway completely affordable, and the fashionista's answer to never repeating the same dress. They even offer an option of renting a 2nd size for FREE! This ensures that you won't end up without a dress due to fit. I have found that many of these dresses are available right now in stores, so why not go try them on for size and fit there, and then rent them online!

Rent the Runway is a fairly new site, but I am excited to see what happens next season when their current dresses are no longer seasonal. My hope is that they will be selling them for steep discounts, giving members another way to score a top designer dress for cheap!

An invitation to a winter wedding can sometimes present a tricky situation - what to wear. Often winter weddings are a slightly more upscale events, that require a cocktail dress. Although wearing black to a wedding is perfectly acceptable, many people shy away from it. The problem then arrises of what colors are appropriate to wear which won't overshadow the bride?

Winter Wedding Guidelines

1. Do not wear any shades of white or ivory to a wedding; red should be avoided as well.

2. Ideal colors to wear are rich jewel tones, which add interest, but are subdued enough to not make you the center of attention (it's not your day after all).

3. During this season of sequins, metallics embellishments a general rule should be to keep all "flare" to a minimum.

4. Tights are an important part of a winter ensemble as they promise to not only keep your legs warm, but make any dress more winter appropriate.

5. If the wedding is held in a conservative church bring a pashmina to drape over your shoulders during the service if wearing anything shoulder baring.

6. Avoid anything too tight, low cut or short.

To grant our wish and re-create a few of our favorite new accessories…yep, three ways to take a bit of craftiness and channel it into full-blown fall '09 fashion!

Materials Needed: 1. A pair of tights 2. Sequins 3. Fabric glue 4. Needle and thread

How to: 1. Place a piece of cardboard (some tights come with it) inside each leg. The cardboard will prevent both sides from sticking together, and will also stretch fabric to work on. 2. Use a super duper strong fabric glue to smother small areas on tights. 3. Cluster sequins on top of glue and spread all over the surface of the tights. Feel free to layer on top of one another for a more three dimensional effect. If you have any sequins or broken mirrored jewelry lying around, use them. Traditional sequins aren't the only option for tights—get creative! 4. Once dry, reinforce sequin clusters with a needle and thread. Use similarly colored thread to blend in with tights and sequins. Tights get a makeover this season with embellishments, making them the focal point of any outfit. Keep those gorgeous gams warm by donning tights in a variety of hues, fabrics and patterns.

When it comes to color, some of the most drool-worthy hues are shades of gray, purple and hunter green. Gray offers up a unique alternative to boring black tights; if daring to sport a bolder color, keep the rest of the ensemble more neutral.

Fabric is all about knit leg wear, which is sure to keep those legs toasty on a cold day. This casual fabric is the perfect tool to dress down more formal attire. Take a preppy approach with a pencil skirt, silk blouse and cardigan for work.

Not typically one to splurge on expensive cosmetics, I am usually an advocate of drugstore buys. However, I couldn't pass up a post about Bobbi Brown's new holiday collection Chrome palette.

Utilizing a cool palette, Brown has created a collection that gives off a chic, downtown vibe. Icy, shimmering eyes and lips create a contemporary take on special occasion beauty. The palette boasts 10 eye shadows, and 4 lip shades that are available in stores now. At the price of $75, I consider this palette a steal considering the array of shadows and lip color included.

Tantalizing Trend #8: Jumpsuits

A rather controversial trend - the jumpsuit is one of those items that you either love, or hate. It is also a look that is extremely difficult to pull off, however, when worn correctly can exude a feeling of chicness. Sister to the jumpsuit is the romper, a short version of a jumpsuit. The romper can still be worn well into fall with long sleeve versions, or by donning a pair of tights.

With this trend, there is a fine line between the best-dressed and worst-dressed list. Follow these simple rules to insure your spot on the best-dressed side.

Rule 1: Choose a loose fit, there is nothing worse then a tight jumpsuit creating the dreaded camel-toe effect.

Rule 2: It's all about the fabric. Now is not the time to skimp in the fabric department. Select a jumpsuit made of flowing silk, or a heavier cotton. Steer clear of anything with spandex in it or the look will go from chic to cheap.

Rule 3: Wide or strait leg is the way to go. There are VERY few people who can pull of a jumpsuit with a skinny leg. Keeping the leg line streamline with a wide leg will make you look long and lean.

Rule 4: Consider a belt. Help break up the solidness of a jumpsuit, and define your waist by adding a belt. Whether thick or thin, the belt should accent the outfit, and not be the focus.

Rule 5: Choose the color or pattern wisely. The safest way to go is by selecting a dark color such as black, navy or brown. Bolder colors and prints can look nice as a romper, however they are too much on a jumpsuit.

Rule 6: Two-tone. To soften the look of a jumpsuit or romper, consider one that mixes two different fabrics or colors. This gives the appeal of separates, while still being one piece.

Rule 7: Simple accessories. The jumpsuit is a focal point enough, without adding crazy accessories to the mix. Stick with a simple clutch, long earrings, and a nice metallic heel to finish the look.

LIFE AFTER UGGS

Equally as comfortable, and definitely more chic, the riding boot offers the perfect alternative to the very passe UGG snow boot. Although I do still see a lost soul, or two, running about town in a beloved pair of UGG boots, the general opinion is that UGG's are over...like 2 years ago over.

So it is time to invest in a new kind of comfortable, go anywhere boot. The casual structure and detailing on a riding boot makes it the perfect candidate to replace the UGG. They can be worn with just about anything, from jeans to leggings, and even a dress with tights. Better yet, there are a wide variety of styles, colors and heel heights available to match your taste.

This post was inspired originally by a friend who came to me with a unique problem, she has been searching for a pair of riding boots, but due to a slight vertical challenge, can't seem to find a pair that are short enough to allow her legs to bend. At 5'9" myself, it had never occurred to me that this could, in fact, be a common problem. Therefore, just for those of you who are on the shorter side, rows 3 & 4 below feature boots with a shorter shaft length (under 14 inches). Keep this in mind when shopping for other boots as well: avoid over the knee boots as they will make you look even shorter. Opt instead for ankle and mid-calf boots.

Update Your Wardrobe

Fave bloggers Katherine Power and Hillary Kerr of Who What Wear posted an inspiring video blog Monday regarding what key pieces will help update a current wardrobe for this season. Bloomingdales sponsored the video, which showcased a fabulous leopard coat by Aqua, and knee high boots.

Using Katherine and Hillary's suggestions, I thought I would add a few more items to the list. An earlier blog of mine details all of the top trends for fall, but it is not always reasonable to stock your wardrobe with ALL of the trends of the season. There are a few fool proof items that you can buy each Fall which will help bring your current wardrobe up to speed.

A New Coat

Invest each season in a new coat that can be worn for a multitude of occasions. The above options are all unique choices that incorporate a trend of the season. Option 1 is a classic shape with a ruffle collar that adds interest. Option 2 is a more daring choice, which incorporates the fur trend of the season. Option 3 is a bold color that is sure to turn heads.

A Pair of Fall Footwear

Steve Madden * Max Studio * Dolce and Gabbana

As mentioned in a previous post, boots are THE footwear of choice this fall. Pick your favorite style and make them your main investment for the season. Choose a pair that stands out in some way, be it detailing, shape, color or fabrics. Make your boots the focal point of your outfit.

A New Pair of Pants

Each season pant trends change - maybe it is the fit (hello skinny jeans!), or maybe it is the fabric. Any of the above pants incorporates a key trend of the season. Topping my list is a pair of perfectly fitted leather pants. If leather isn't for you, try uber-luxurious fabric - velvet. Another favorite pant for fall is the harem pant - although don't expect to see me sporting them around town.

A New Bag

An easy update, a new bag can add a little flare to your wardrobe. This season make it speak with a sequin bag, which is a great way to incorporate the sequin trend into your existing wardrobe.

Alluring Accessories

The simplest way to update an outfit? Accessories! And this season accessories are huge. Literally. Shoes are higher, necklaces are bigger and bags are more over-sized than ever. That doesn't mean that the price tag has to be big.

Bargain retail favorite, Forever21, offers up an ample array of adornments at affordable prices. The collection of jewelry, cloches, scarves and belts exceed expectations with many well made pieces which look more costly than their low price tag suggests.

Tantalizing Trend #6: Strong Shoulders

Powerful, sharp and strong - these are all adjectives used to describe shoulders on the Fall 2009 runways. Bringing the 80's back, shoulders make a bold statement with jackets, shirts and dresses alike.

Once again, fall favorite Balmain wowed on-lookers with a slew of jackets and dresses with strong shoulders. However, this trend made it's way into collections both on and off the runway, making it a guilty splurge, or an affordable find, depending on one's discretion.

Spring 2010 shows also brought traces of shoulder pads, making this trend more than just a one season wonder.

Tantalizing Trend #5: One-Shoulder

A favorite for fall, asymmetrical necklines and one-shoulder apparel should be on your must-have list. This is a trend that comes and goes every few years, making it one worth the splurge. Once this trend gets the cold shoulder, store it in the back of your closet for a few seasons until it is once again en vogue.

Shoulders are often referred to as an erogenous zone on women, and this season there is no sexier way to bare your shoulders than to leave one completely uncovered. A one-shoulder tee adds instant style and sex appeal, even when thrown on for a casual outing with jeans. For cocktail hour, take the look to a new level with a one-shoulder, long sleeve dress.

To accessorize, leave the necklace at home, and rock a glam pair of earrings, with a few dainty bangles. For day or for night, a clutch is a better choice than a shoulder bag, keeping the shoulder line simple.

It started with boyfriend cardigans, then the boyfriend blazer was introduced. With the appearance of the boyfriend jean on the fashion scene, it's pretty clear that boyfriend wear is a definite trend this season.

So what exactly is boyfriend wear? Boyfriend wear is clothing made to be a little roomy, and cut more for mans shape. This isn't saying to go out and borrow your boyfriends clothes, unless you pretty much wear the same size. Clothing made to be "boyfriend wear" is still cut with a female in mind, and unlike your boyfriends clothes, shouldn't look sloppy on.

The great thing about this trend is that is a comfortable, fashion forward way to do casual. Throwing on any element of boyfriend wear is a great way to dress down any outfit; even a cocktail dress becomes more casual when worn with a boyfriend blazer or cardi.

The key to pulling off this casual trend is mixing boyfriend wear with feminine, fitted elements. If you are wearing slouchy boyfriend jeans add a fitted cashmere sweater on top. Likewise, an over-sized boyfriend shirt looks fierce with skinny jeans or leggings.

While on the topic of boots, I couldn't pass up a post about my favorite shoe store in Atlanta! Opening its doors in May 2009, Jedal has proven worthy of its prime location in Phipps Plaza. Born out of one woman's love for shoes, Jedal is located on the 2nd floor, above Tiffany's and gives passer-byers a peak of Jedal's savory footwear through windows that make up the walls of the store.

Inside, the store is modern chic, with black carpet, a modern chandelier type fixture, and white leather chairs. And OH the shoes! Lining the walls are some of the most glorious, perfectly crafted shoes that I have ever laid eyes on. Don't expect to find these shoes elsewhere in Atlanta, either. Owner Jennifer Danelli visits Milan often for the shoe fashion shows, and selects styles that she knows won't easily be found.

Speaking of Jennifer, she is often found at the store, teetering around in a pair of Jedal's newest shoes. A sweet, bubbly personality, Jennifer is happy to do whatever she can to help her customers. She has also begun a collaboration with Marco Massetti, Italian shoe designer, creating a shoe line called Jedal by Marco Massetti. Detail is the key word in these designs: ornate swarovski crystals, poems, and custom words make up the collection. The shoes almost resemble jewelry more than footwear.

And the price doesn't come cheap, all of the shoes in the store are designer heels, and come with a hefty price tag. But, as I once told Jennifer, these are shoes that actually LOOK like they cost as much as the price tag says, a rare find these days. Don't take it from me, see for yourself, and be sure to check out Jedal's website, and stop by their store next time you're in Atlanta. I promise, it's worth your while, even if you have no plans of buying shoes.

Next summer is all about boots too! But they are open short boots. One that I see everywhere is almost like a flip flop mixed with a boot. It looks like a flip flop at the bottom but then is closed at the top and goes up the leg like a boot. Really fun totally new! So buy short open boots now that you can wear into next summer. In the winter wear them with tights and in the summer wear them open toed!

The hint of crispness in the air, the gradual turning of leaves, football games. . . .all of this can only mean one thing: boot season! Although I am sad to see summer go, there is something nostalgic about pulling on that first pair of fall boots.

A staple for fall, boots have never seen so many variations before. From sandal boots to thigh high boots, they come in all sizes, shapes, colors and embellishments. Ditch your shoes this season for a pair of boots, which this season, go with any ensemble.

Boot Dictionary

With so many choices this season, how do you keep them strait? This Boot Dictionary and Guide will help you decide which pair is best for you!

Shootie: New for 2009, the shootie is a cross between a shoe and a boot. Spice up an outfit that you would typically wear a pump or sandal with.

Bootie: Brought onto the fashion scene fall of 2007, the bootie is very similar to an ankle boot, but doesn't cover the ankle. Wear these with dresses to give a pretty frock a fashionable edge.

Ankle Boot: A boot that covers only the ankle, new styles have embelishments such as ruffles and flowers. Pair with rolled up boyfriend jeans for casual chic ease.

Slouch Boot: The slouch boot can be any height, and is made of a soft suede or leather, allowing it to casually slouch around the leg. Dress down an outfit, and make it look effortless with this choice.

Riding Boot: Just as the name suggests, the riding boot is made (or at least resembles) for riding horses. This equestrian inspired boot is a perfect solution for a weekend shopping trip, or casual night out.

Over-the-Knee/Thigh Boot: My favorite boot for fall, the over-the-knee (OTK)/thigh boot comes in a few variations. The boots can either be fitted, or loose around the leg. The OTK variation covers the leg up to just above the knee.

The thigh high version comes all the way up to the thigh. Wear these with dresses, or over jeans. When selecting a thigh boot use discretion, and lean towards a suede, round toe boot in a neutral color to avoid looking like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. For a more conservative look, pair thigh boots with a pencil skirt or knee-length dress.

Fold-over boot: The fold-over boot folds typically at the top near the knee. Newer versions such as the Balmain boot pictured above fold completely in half .

Convertible Boot: Recessionista's watch out! Convertible boots give you two boots in one, some fold over while some can slouch down. Others, like my favorite by Colin Stuart, unzip at the ankle to make two totally separate boots.

It is well known that my all time favorite designer is Christian Louboutin, with his perfectly sculpted heels finished with a signature red sole. My love affair began five years ago, on a trip to Paris, where I spent several weeks canvassing the city for Louboutin's allusive flagship store. Located on a tiny side street in the 7th arrondissement, the modestly sized store offers a large selection of Louboutin's finest creations.

Several years earlier I had already developed a love affair with another Parisian native, Ladurée. In addition to a bustling location on the Champs-Elysées, Ladurée has 7 other locations across Paris, London, Switzerland and Tokyo. Most know Ladurée for their delectible pastries, most notably, the macaroon.

Now, these two Parisian powerhouses have joined forces to create a limited addition box collection of macaroons, designed by Christian Louboutin. Inside the boxes, pastry chef Philippe Andrieu offers up a macaroon with Mediterranean flavors of fig and date. The macaroon top is black, and the bottom is, of course, red. . .just like Louboutin's coveted high heels.

If you are like me, you may be hesitant to watch a TV show that is based around New York's teenage prep-school kids. However, I highly recommend you pick up Season 1; chances are you will find yourself addicted by the end of scene 1. Gossip Girl is also an excellent source of fashion eye candy, and four very diverse styles.

Tantalizing Trend #1: SEQUINS!

Oh how I adore sequins! For Fall, luster, shine and glitz are on the menu, and sequins are the main course. Dazzling the runways, sequins show up on everything from shoes to coats and everything in-between.

If you fit into the more conservative sector, a sequin embellished cardigan or sparsely sequined top may be the best fit for you. Accessories also offer up and quick, easy a less over-the-top way to work this trend into an everyday wardrobe.

For those with a little more gusto, slip into a full sequin dress for evening, or even a sequin skirt for day. Dress it down with a casual tee or chunky knit sweater for a simple, thrown together kind of look.

Now, the all out fashionista will find even more excitement in sequins this season. I for one am dieing to snatch up a pair of black sequin leggings! The options are endless with the bountiful sequin options, and I am quite afraid that by the end of this season, my closet may begin to look a bit like a costume room for cirque-du-soleil: but I have to admit that I am okay with that.

A general rule with this sparkling trend is to approach with care. If unsure how to wear it right, stick with black or metallic sequins, and not brightly colored rainbow ones. This will keep your look chic and sophisticated, instead of product of the 80's. Finally, remember to experiment with adding a variety of textures such as velvet, leather and wool to your ensemble.

For the first time in quite a while, I am completely in love with the seasons trends. Heavily inspired by the 80's, Fall/Winter 09 trends are all about textures and detailing.

Shaping up to be one of the most exciting seasons in fashion in a long time, this season has a wide variety of trends making their way to the runway. From skinny pants, to trouser style, to 40's inspired, to 80's harlequin pants - there is something for everyone this season. It is all about playing with fashion, mixing prints, patterns and textures, and making a bold statement with clothing.

Below are some of the top trends for Fall, which I will expand upon as the season continues to progress. As with any trend, mix these in with the current classic pieces in your wardrobe to keep your ensemble from looking like a costume.

1. Sequins! A fantastic way to add some glitz and glamour to any wardrobe, expect to see sequins everywhere for Fall.

2. Leather - After spending much of last Fall searching for the perfect pair of leather pants, I am so glad to see that leather is at the fore-front of fashion this season.

3. Boots - Ankle boots, knee boots, and my favorite, thigh-high boots are the shoe of choice this season.

4. Boyfriend Wear - Last Fall we saw the boyfriend cardigan, Spring brought the boyfriend blazer, and now we include the boyfriend jean to round out the list of fashionable boyfriend wear.

5. One Shoulder - Exposed shoulders were all over the runway, and they are a great way to add some sex appeal to an understated outfit.

6. Strong Shoulders - Blazers, shirts and dresses are showing more than your average shoulder pads, a fall back to the 80's, shoulders are getting wider this season.

7. Ruffles - Back for another season, ruffles are making their way into bags, shoes and coats for Fall.

8. Jumpsuits - A controversial trend, I'll let you in on some chic jumpsuits that you're sure to fall in love with.

9. Detailed Tights - Textures, embellishment and colors give tights a make-over this season, and add instant pizazz to the plainest of outfits.

10. Velvet - An ultra luxurious fabric, velvet adds another texture to the list this Fall.

11. Fur - Fur vests, jackets and detailing were all over Fall runways. Protect the animals and opt for faux fur instead of the real deal.

12. Statement Coats - Coats aren't just for keeping warm - use them to make a statement with shapes and detailing.

Oh Blog, How I Have Missed You

I have a confession. . .I have been a bad blogger. I let my poor little blog fall to the wayside, while focusing on a larger project.

In May I took a position as the Fashion Editor for EF Magazine, an online Atlanta based fashion magazine. Not only was the magazine Atlanta based, but it had a strictly Atlanta focus. Every person, boutique and designer featured in the magazine was local to Atlanta, which was a nice change from the many Atlanta fashion magazines who lack the strict Atlanta focus.

With a team consisting of a wonderful editor, bookings editor, and graphic coordinator - we were able to grow the magazine to over 100 pages of fabulous-ness. Unfortunately, the magazine industry is currently an unsteady one, and the owners put the project on hold for now.

Having just wrapped up the September issue, I am now moving on to more exciting endeavors, and will keep you all updated as I go.

In the meantime, I am back to my blog in full force, and could not possibly be more excited about the upcoming season of flashy fall fashion!

SEEING RED. . . .SOLES

There is nothing like fabulous shoes to get me motivated and cure my writers block. . .especially when those fabulous shoes happen to from Christian Louboutin!

Since opening his first boutique in Paris in 1992, Christian Louboutin has flown to the top as one of the most coveted shoe designers of the century! His signature red soles are the epitome of style and wealth. The red sole itself came about as a "happy accident", Louboutin explains.

"I did not really choose the red sole. It’s more like the red sole came to me and had to stay with me. It started as a happy accident, which I kept. I was very inspired by pop art so all my drawings were really full of colors. So the first prototype arrives. It’s very very very very similar to my designs so I was very happy. But something was missing. Thank God I had this girl with me who was painting her nails. Grabbed her nailpolish… thank you to Chanel for that! (laughs)… I grabbed the nailpolish and I painted the sole. I started immediately in my shop to have the red sole the same season."

Thank goodness for that "accident", it is the red sole that has helped sky rocket the Louboutin brand and make his shoes so easily recognizable. Unfortunately. . .the red sole comes with quite the lofty price tag of $500 to more than $1000 a pair!

Guess what? TOMORROW Gilt Groupe is having a Christian Louboutin sale!!! This is nearly unheard of. . .I have scoured ebay as well as clearance sales at Saks, and it is nearly impossible to find a decent Louboutin for less than $250! I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Mr. Louboutin myself when he came to Atlanta for an event at Jeffrey's this past October. He signed the bottom of my coveted Louboutin's that I bought in Paris 4 years ago at his flagship store! On my shoe he wrote: "Pour Lauryn, Devine. Louboutin"

I spoke with him in French for a few minutes, and just by that brief meeting I can tell what a kind and friendly man he is. I, along with my shoes, was featured in The Atlantan as well as Atlanta Peach Magazines. It was an experience that I will never forget!

Eco-friendly clothing: the first word that comes to mind is burlap sack. However, eco-friendly clothing has come a long way. Eco-friendly fashion designers now produce stylish, fashion forward clothing lines that look the same as any other clothing.

What exactly does eco-friendly mean? Eco-friendly means that the clothing is made with organic materials that can be replenished as quickly as they are depleted.

We all need to do our part to help our environment. So when buying basics, such as tee's and tanks, why not buy an eco-friendly version? As you can see though, eco-friendly clothing can be super chic as well!

With St. Patrick's Day right around the corner I have one thing on my mind - the color green! Typically when I'm trying to find something green for St. Patty's day I have such a hard time, but not this year. I found a variety of fabulous green items that range in price as well as style.

So what does this influx of green mean? It means that green isn't just for St. Patrick's day anymore. Green is definitely a hot color for spring this year, and I love the cheerful addition that it adds to an outfit.

So, when wearing green what can you match with it??

Green pairs really well with yellow. You can also pair green with navy, white, black or any other neutral shade.

If you are wearing a green skirt look for a shirt with a pattern in it that also pulls in some green. Look for a shirt with a larger pattern that includes white which will not overwhelm the skirt.

Wearing a green top? White shorts, pants or a skirt look FABULOUS with this! You could also pair it with jeans, or black.

When it comes to shoes I am a huge fan of a nude shoe when wearing a bright color like green. A nude pump or sandal will also help make your legs look longer and leaner!

Swimsuits for YOUR Body!

Well girls. . .it's official. . .swimsuit season is quickly approaching. The sudden influx of people at the gym certainly gives that away! The hunt is on for the perfect swimsuit this season, and I have compiled some guidelines for choosing the best swimsuit for your body type!

All of the suits below are from Victoria's Secret. Not only do they have one of the largest collections of swimwear, but I love how easy it is to mix and match tops and bottoms, and how most bottoms come in a variety of cuts. This makes it extra simple to find the best suit for YOUR own body. Another perk of buying top and bottom separately is sizing. Most of us aren't perfectly proportioned, which means we might wear a different size top than we would bottoms!

Large Chest

For those whose chest is on the large side, finding an appropriate swimsuit can be a problem. Both of the above swimsuits are great, and stylish options for women who have a large chest.

The black swimsuit to the left is a great option for those who need a lot of support. The cups have an underwire as well as removable padding, making the suit fit more like a bra than a swimsuit. Note that the halter is thick, instead of a thin string. This gives more support, and is more comfortable than having a thin string cutting into your neck and shoulders.

The suit on the right also lends support. Note the thick band below the cups. . .this helps keep the suit in place, give you support and keep the girls locked and loaded. If you want a triangle style suit, look for styles like this one that have that band under the chest, this will also help prevent "under boobage" from peaking out the bottom!

Small Chest

A small chest is one of the easiest problems to fix when looking at swimsuits. The Victoria's Secret Miracle Bra Suit collections makes it even easier. The suit on the left is part of this collection, and includes padding to help the girls out. Adding a pattern to the chest helps emphasize it as well.

Another perk of a small chest is the ability to wear a bandeau top! Because people with a small chest don't need extra support, a bandeau top works perfectly without falling down!

Another way to make a small chest appear larger is ruffles. Victoria's Secret has several suits with ruffles on the top. This is an easy trick to add size to your chest!

Wide Hips/Big Booty

A Pear Shape is one of the most common shapes of women. . .and one of the most common complaints. Well, you can't change your shape, but you can use these tips to help take the focus off of your lower half.

Both suits have something in common: attention grabbing tops. The suit on the left pairs a solid bottom with a detailed top. This brings the attention away from your hips and up towards your face. Likewise, the suit on the right has a pattern on the bottom, but the sequined top still draws the eye upwards. Almost any suit at Victoria's Secret can be mixed to work like this. Just find a top you like, and then check out the solid bottom options in a matching or contrasting color!

Another great thing about both suits is the tie bottoms. Suits without tie bottoms tend to be a problem for pear shaped women as they usually cut into your sides. When selecting tie bottoms make sure that they offer full front and back coverage. Nothing makes your hips look wider than a small front portion and a foot of tie wrapping around your sides. Note how on both these suits the front panel extends all the way to the hips.

Stomach

The absolute BEST way to hide a tummy is to wear a one piece or a tankini. The good news is that both of these have come a LONG way over the years, and now are not only trendy, but really cute! Look for detailing around the bust and hips to draw the eye away from the stomach.

If you really are set on wearing a bikini, look for bottoms that are a little higher cut. This doesn't mean mom bottoms, but just avoid a scoop bottom.

Petite or Strait Figure

If you are petite look for swimsuits that don't cover you up or overwhelm your small size. Go for smaller patterns as opposed to large patterns.

For strait figures the suit on the left is perfect! The ruffles on the top and around the hips help to add curves and give you a more hourglass figure. Look for detailing like this that will help add some shape to your strait figure.

Everyone

1. Buy your size: All too often I see women wearing swimsuits that are a size too small! Just go one size up to avoid muffin top, and other bulging that isn't flattering.

2. Try on, try on, try on: There are SO many different styles out there that you have to try on different things to see what will work best for you.

3. Mix and Match: We are all built differently. Mix and match different tops and bottoms to find the fit that works best for your body. Small chest, big hips? Go for a ruffled, print top and match with solid, tie bottoms!

Last night I went to the Fox Theater in Atlanta to see my wonderful cousin, Colt Prattes, perform in A Chorus Line National Tour! The show was fantastic, and Colt was amazing! He plays the part of Al, a Broadway dancer auditioning for a part in. . .the chorus line!

A 2 hour show with no intermission, the show is very different than other musicals. The cast spends 90% of the show in a call line at an audition while the director goes down the line asking questions regarding each characters backgrounds. The audience hears the stories of each character, and why they decided to be a dancer. The show covers topics from homosexuality to gonorrhea to tits and ass. This is one show you don't want to miss!

If you are in Atlanta be sure to get tickets for the show, they will be at the Fox Theater through Sunday, and then they are off to Washington, DC. If you aren't in Atlanta check out their website for shows in a city near you!

Look like a Celebrity, for less!

The Oscars were just over a week ago, and already designers have come out with cheaper versions of the gowns celebrities wore on the Red Carpet. Typically these gowns are called "Celebrity Inspired". . .but I have to say, there is nothing inspired about these. . .they look IDENTICAL to the real deal.

Most of the gowns worn by celebrities on the Red Carpet retail somewhere between $10,000 to upwards of $150,000 (Penelope Cruz's vintage Balmain)!!!! Edress Me has these celebrity look-a-like gowns that will cost you only $200 to $400! I am blown away by Edress Me's version of Eva Longoria Parker's red Reem Acra for the Golden Globes. They also have a more body friendly version of Jennifer Lopez's Marchesa gown she wore for the Golden Globes as well!

Spring Fever

Spring may not be here just yet. . .but it is all I can think about these days! I am checking weather.com daily to see when it will begin to warm up enough to bust out my Spring clothes! One of my favorite things about Spring is the dresses! Not only are they pretty, and flattering, but they are such an easy outfit! No mixing and matching tops and bottoms, just throw on a dress, jewelry and heels and go.

Another great thing about dresses is that they can easily go from the office to cocktail hour. Depending on the conservativeness of you office, a dress can be a great option for Spring. When wearing a dress to the office there are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Make sure you aren't showing too much skin: this means leg, chest and back! It's okay to wear a sleeveless dress if you throw a cardigan or jacket over it for the office.

2. Make sure it's not too tight.

3. Make sure the material is appropriate. Don't wear casual fabrics to the office unless you have a casual dress code.

All of the dresses below are appropriate for the office (depending on your office dress code) with a cardigan or jacket, and can go strait from the office to drinks, dinner or dancing after!

1. Anthropologie Dress: I love this dress and think it can be great for day and night! For work wear with a colorful cardigan, black heels and sophisticated jewelry. For night change into fun heels, colorful jewelry, and a clutch and you are ready to go!

2. Shoshanna Yellow Dress: Another great dress! This doesn't require a cardigan for work unless your dress code doesn't allow shoulders to show. In that case throw on a black jacket or cardigan. For shoes go with a neutral heel. For cocktail hour throw on a chunky bangle and a patterned heel, or even go with pink!

3. Suzi Chin: I'm typically not one for floral, but this year I can't get enough of flowing floral chiffon dresses. For the office: yellow cardigan, neutral heel.

4. Milly Dress: This dress may be stretching the boundary of office appropriate. . .but I loved it. . .so I had to put it on here!

5. Banana Republic Dress: The structure and sleeves to this dress make it appropriate for just about any office. There is no need to add a cardigan or jacket, just wear with nude shoes so as to not fight the graphic pattern of the dress. For evening throw on a metallic sandal and some bangles.

6. JCrew Dress: This dress would look great with a slim fit, 2 button blazer and nude pumps for the office. For night lose the blazer, add a gold bracelet and metallic heels and you are done!

7. Bebe Dress: Add a cardigan or 2 button blazer to this dress for the office. Pair with black heels a simple jewelry. You may also need to add a camisole under the dress to avoid showing too much cleavage. For night loose the camisole and cardigan, slip into some strappy sandals and add a chunky statement necklace.

8. JCrew Dress: I'm not sure if this dress would work with a cardigan or not due to the high neckline. This dress is appropriate for those in a more creative field with a lax dress code due to the bare shoulders. Pair with pumps for the office and sandals for cocktail hour.

The Oscars is one of the most anticipated events in Hollywood. This is the award show of all award shows; the most glamorous event of the year. This year was no exception as stars dazzled on the red carpet. Gowns and bling were bigger than ever!

On major trend on the red carpet was big, bold and colored bling. This is in tune with my previous post about statement jewelry. Bold accessories are a great way to update an outfit, or add interest to a look. Obviously the jewelry seen at the Oscars isn't in anyone's budget, but costume jewelry is an acceptable alternative.

Best dressed in my opinion was Penelope Cruz in Vintage Balmain. I LOVE vintage gowns, and I thought this gown was flawless on her! Runner up would be Angelina Jolie, who looked perfect (as always) in a simple, yet chic, black gown by Elie Saab. Her oversize emerald earrings were the perfect compliment for the gown. I also think Marissa Tomei deserves an honorable mention.

On the worst dressed list is Beyonce wearing House of Dereon. From the print, to the style I thought this dress was just all wrong. I was also not impressed by Vanessa Hudgens or Miley Cyrus. Both gowns were too much for girls of their age -- although I give them credit for dressing elegantly instead of too sexy on the red carpet!

2009 Trend #3 - Decorative Zippers

As stated in my 9 Trend for 2009, no more hidden zippers; now zippers are used as a decorative detail. From exposed, to contrasting fabric trim, zippers will be a focal point for the back of shirts as well as dresses. I LOVE this trend; I'm typically a fan of anything that draws interest to the back of clothing. Be careful not to over-do the look by no over accessorizing or pairing a zipper back top with a pencil skirt with back detailing as well!

GET THE LOOK

This trend is an easy one to copy on a budget! Go through your closet, what items do you have that might look good with an exposed or decorative zipper? Measure the length of the existing zipper and go to your local craft store and find a zipper that is the same length in a contrasting color or that has other decorative touches. If you can't sew, take the zipper and item to your tailor and have them rip out the existing zipper and replace it with your new zipper, sewing it so that the ribbon is on the OUTSIDE instead of hidden on the inside!

VOILA - a totally custom made, one-of-a-kind look! You can find zippers for $10-$20, and the cost of tailoring should run about the same. New look for just $40!

Look like a Million $$ on a Budget!

You can't go a day without hearing the word: recession. Yes. . .we are in one, but that doesn't mean that you have to look like it. In fact, studies have shown that the way we look can have a direct effect on how we feel, and our productivity level. So how can you look like a million bucks in the middle of a recession?

There are several things you can do to save money this season without forfeiting style.

There are a 2 great things about vintage clothing: the price and the one-of-a-kind find. I have found that spring/summer is the best for vintage finds. There's an abundance of great vintage dresses out there! Check the yellow pages for a vintage store near you, or try online at sites like EBAY (check out my favorite Vintage sellers above!)

When vintage shopping there are a few things to watch out for. The first is size; vintage clothing typically runs smaller than clothing today, so be sure to try on or get measurements before buying. Also, you should NEVER wear vintage head to toe, be sure to mix a vintage piece with a newer more modern piece to keep from looking like you are headed to a decades party.

2. Alterations

Chances are if you go through your closet you will find a number of items that you no longer wear. Try them on and look at what you could change to make it wearable. Do you have a pair of flare jeans hanging in your closet that you no longer wear? Take them to a tailor and they can easily change your old flare leg jeans into skinny jeans for a fraction of the cost of a new pair of jeans!

More easy changes to make are sleeve length and neck line. If you are unsure of what you can do to an item take it to a tailor. A good tailor should be able to make some suggestions as to how you can update your item, or tell you that their is nothing that can be done!

3. Sample Sales

It used to be that sample sales were something that only New Yorkers could take advantage of. Times have changed with the start of online sample sales. There are several websites which offer online sample sales: Gilt Groupe, Editors Closet and Haute Look are my favorites. These websites are by invitation only, check back tomorrow and I'll post an invitation link so you can join!

These websites send out daily emails informing of their upcoming sample sales. Be sure to shop early and buy something if you want it immediately. These sales have a tendency to sell out fast! Also, most of these websites offer money incentives if your friends sign up and buy something!

4. Discount Stores

1 & 3: Smart Bargains

2: BlueFly
Trench: $90

There are a lot of discount stores and websites out there. . .and many of them carry overstock of items from THIS season! TJ Maxx is one of my favorites, and they even have a "From the Runway" section which carries high end designers at low prices! Filenes Basement is another favorite! Warning: go prepared to dig for items. Great finds can be made, but it takes a lot of time and energy to find them! Websites such as SmartBargains and BlueFly also offer great deals! Check back daily for new items!

5. Coupons and Sales

With the current economy, retail stores are hurting. This means more coupons and sales for us! Before you go shopping check out stores websites for any sales or coupons that might be going on. Websites such as RetailMeNot.com post coupon codes for online shopping. Check for these before checking out to find great discounts!

6. Budget Stores

1. Forever21 2. Walmart 3. Old Navy

When it comes to basics, there is no need to waste money. Stores like Forever21, Walmart and Old Navy are great for stocking up on cheap basics such as tee's and tanks! H&M is another great place to find great work pieces and the occasional trendy item.

Be careful of overbuying at stores like these though. Don't buy items just because they are cheap, only buy what you need. Also don't dress in Forever21 head to toe, mix a cheap tee or sweater with designer jeans and a nice handbag to avoid looking cheap.

7. Accessorize

As I've mentioned before, accessories are a great way to update a look from past years, or to add interest to an otherwise plain outfit. Check craigslist or your newspaper for upcoming Estate Sales. These are great places to find really unique jewelry and scarves for super cheap!

Buy a really great pair of shoes that are sure to make a statement! Try to find a pair that can be worn with a variety of looks.

2009 Trend #2 - Bold Accessories

Accessories were bold for fall. . .well expect bigger and bolder for Spring! Necklaces are making big statements, and shoes are wilder than ever! This trend is really taking off thanks to the down turned economy. Adding bold, new accessories is a cheap and easy way to update a look from past seasons!

This Spring take a plain white cotton dress and add a statement necklace, bold shoes and a bright colored clutch and take your fabulous self out for the evening! There is still the danger of over accessorizing though! When it comes to accessories I like to follow the rule of 2: meaning 2 eye catching accessories per outfit. Choose a bold necklace and belt, but the keep the shoes, bag and bracelets toned down a little. Or opt for oversize earrings and bracelets, but keep the rest more subdued. Bags in python prints are especially popular this season!

If you are trying to keep an eye on the wallet this season, opt for fun, bold accessories that you can mix with the clothes that you already have! A GREAT place to find awesome jewelry is Estate Sales! You can find these listed in your local paper or on Craigslist! My friends and I have found a lot of amazing necklaces, cufflinks and rings for just a few dollars at estate sales! And you are sure to have a one of a kind piece as most of the jewelry is costume jewelry from past decades!

And now for the GOWN. . . .

Michelle Obama chose a white gown designed by Taiwan born, Manhattan based designer Jason Wu. I thought the color looked great on her. . .and I love that she chose something one shoulder. Past that, I hate to have to say that I am disappointed in Michelle's Inaugural Ball Gown choice.

I think that there are other one shoulder gowns that might have been more flattering. . .and the flower looking details aren't my favorite either. Don't get me wrong. . .I think Michelle is beautiful. . .but I just think SO many other styles could have been better.

I do have to give Michelle A LOT of credit for continuously choosing lesser known designers. . .I respect her for not going the easy route with big name, high fashion labels.

Bottom line . . . I'm disappointed in the choice, however, as long as Michelle feels beautiful, thats what matters the most.

And what did my readers think that Michelle should have worn???

The Monique Lhuillier gown was the favorite among my readers. . .I have to agree that it would have been a better choice!

One of my friends just sent me an e-mail with an amazing Michael Kors dress that is her #1 wish for Spring this year! It incorporates the red and blue combination that I touched on earlier this week!

I have to agree. . .I LOVE it! The seemingly simple dress gets more complex the more you see of it. . .and I just love anything with a unique back to it. That ensures that people stare at you as you walk away!

I could totally see Carrie from Sex and The City wearing this. . .but the body conscious beware. Between the fabric, length and horizontal stripes, this is one hard dress to pull off!

And the Inauguration Day Dress is. . . .

According to Perez Hilton, Michelle Obama's (MO) Inauguration Day Dress was made by Cuban American designer Isabel Toledo. Toledo received her degree from New York Fashion Institute of Technology and worked as the creative director at Anne Klein for a while. Toledo has been designing under her own name for 20 years, and is married to fashion illustrator Ruben Tuledo. Tuledo's designs are available at Barney's New York.

Throughout Obama's campaign, he expressed the importance of improving relations with Cuba, which could have had some influence on MO's Inauguration Dress choice.

So back to the dress. . . .I am not very impressed with the selection. I like it in theory. . .yellow is a popular color for Spring 2009, and flattering on MO. And I really love the fabric of the dress. . .but the way it fits Michelle is all wrong.

The neckline of this confuses me as well. What is the jewelry thing doing up there? And is she wearing some sort of cardigan or scarf attached? I'm not so sure what is going on there. The coat seems a little big, and baggy. . .and the lining looks cheap to me. The worst part for me is the SHOES!!

Overall I have to say that this look is a total miss for MO. It makes her look matronly and larger than she is. What do YOU think of this look?

2009 Trend #1 - RED

First -- I apologize for my long absence from blogging. . .I have been in the process of moving, setting up internet, etc.

Now. . .on to elaborating on my 1st predicted Fashion Trend of 2009 - the color red.

I've noticed over the years that I will tend to suddenly gravitate toward one color. . .and the next thing I know it's the "it" color the following season. Well. . .this fall I began to gravitate toward the color red. Well, what do you know. . .Pantone releases it's color trends. . .and right at the top is Fuchsia Red for Spring!

This is a great color as it is flattering on a variety of skin tones. . .and really makes a statement. With a color like red, you do need to be careful not to over-do it! You can incorporate this color into your look in a variety of ways. . .from making it the lead character with a fabulous red dress, or giving it a supporting role as a clutch or shoe.

So what colors go well with red? Red is a pretty vibrant color. . .so you don't want to mix it with too many other colors. . .but it surprisingly can be mixed with almost any color. Red and turquoise-blue is a favorite combination of mind. It gives a very tropical, exotic vibe. Red and yellow also go nicely, although you have to be careful of looking too "mustard and ketchup".

Red and green may start to look a little too holiday. . .lean toward a more yellowy lime green for this combination. Red also of course goes with any of the neutrals such as black, white and brown. Try Red and Navy for a nautical look!

I expect Red to be a front runner for Fall 2009 as well. . .look for darker, rich red tones!

Fashion Colors - SPRING 2009

As I mentioned in my 9 Trends for 2009. . .I see red as being a key color in fashion this year. Pantone is the world leader for colors, not just for fashion, but for graphic design and interiors as well. Fashion designers use Pantone's color system to specify colors they use in their collection. Each season Pantone releases color swatches of the selected colors for the upcoming season.

I LOVE award season! In fact -- I'm planning to have an Oscars party with my best girls - a night of champagne, girl talk, and voting for best and worst dressed! Pay attention to what you see on the red carpet though. . .as this typically sets the tone for trends of the season!

At the Golden Globes there were several trends that stood out:

1. White

4. Statement Necklaces

Eva Mendez and Eva Longoria Parker tie for best dressed in my book! Both women were perfectly styled from hair, to gown choice, to jewelry. I also thought that Olivia Wilde's lavender Reem Acra gown was a fabulous choice for her! Beyonce, Debra Messing and Sandra Bullock also deserve an honorable mention!

On the worst dressed side, I have to say I am disappointed with Renee Zellweger's choice. Renee typically chooses beautiful gowns, landing her on the best dressed list. This time however, she is definitely a miss. . .although I give her credit for taking a fashion risk- the mark of a true fashionista! Cameron Diaz, Freida Pinto, Jenna Fisher also left a lot to be desired. But, my worst dressed award goes to Drew Barrymore - who looked a little like she arrived on the red carpet after a night of partying in her gown.

Oops. . .your slip is showing! Well, here is a slip that is MEANT to be shown! Mirror Mirror on the Wall, Which Gown Should Michelle Wear to the Inaugural Ball?

Inauguration day is just around the corner, set to take place on January 20, 2009. All eyes are on Michelle Obama in anticipation as to what she will wear to the Inaugural Ball. Historically first ladies inauguration wardrobes have made statements about themselves, as well as the times in which we are living. The Boston Herald has an extremely interesting article detailing the history of the First Ladie's Inaugural Gowns.

Designers from across the globe have sent in sketches of designs exclusively for Michelle Obama, but she is yet to announce which design she will be wearing. We may just have to wait until Inauguration night to find out. In the meantime, we can all speculate about which gown she may choose.

In general, I believe that the gown should definitely be made by an American Designer. Also, given the times, I think that it should not be too flashy, or overly ornate; which fits in perfectly with Michelle's simple, young and fresh style.

I think that the Diane Von Furstenburg is fabulous, perfect for Michelle Obama's style and features, and very chic without being flashy. That one gets my vote. . .and she is also an American Designer, which is important to me! I could also see Michelle in the Michael Kors or Elie Tahari's gown. I guess we may just have to wait until the 20th to see which, if any of them, she chooses!

2 More Drop Fashion Week

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Betsey Johnson, Vera Wang and Carmen Marc Valvo all opted out of showing their collections at New York Fashion Week this Spring. Now Monique Lhuillier and Naeem Khan won't be showing either.

According to Paul Wilmot, whose public-relations firm Paul Wilmot Communications represents both brands, the designers will be hosting smaller, more private shows instead. Although previous designers have cited the economy as their reasoning, Wilmot insists that this is not the reason for the change for Lhuillier and Khan. Instead, Wilmot says the designers wanted to try a new approach to selling clothing. The more intimate setting will allow buyers and guests an upclose a personal look at the designs, as well as a chance to meet and talk to the designers.

Although I think that Fashion Week is an incredible event, I do agree that shifting to a different format could yield some positive reactions. This format is a throwback to the original fashion shows when designers such as Coco Chanel used to host small, intimate viewings of their latest collections. This makes the event much more about the clothes, and not so much about the hype surrounding it.

An American in Paris

As I mentioned previously, I spent Saturday in Old Town Alexandria, VA. While exploring I stumbled upon a fantastic boutique called An American in Paris.

Upon entering the small boutique I was greeted by owner Joelle Solimano, a petite french woman with a love for beautiful clothing. Raised in Avingnon, a province in the South of France, Joelle was destined to love clothing. Her father is an Italian native who grew up near Milan, Italy. Joelle moved to Alexandria 15 years ago, and opened her boutique 10 years ago.

Joelle explained to me how to browse through her clothing, pointing to a sign which read, "Due to the delicate fabrics, browse throughout the store by grabbing the hangers, not the garments." Only one sample of each item hangs in the store, with additional sizes in the back room where Joelle will grab it for you. This allows shoppers to browse items easily, without digging through various sizes. . .and allows Joelle to display hundreds of items in her tiny space.

When taking a look around the store you will see wall to wall clothing, with little attention paid to decor. Joelle takes pride in her clothing. . .and to her, the clothes are the decoration. Joelle describes her boutique as an original french boutique where you can find one of a kind pieces.

I chatted with Joelle about her personal style, and her thoughts for trends for the Spring. Joelle describes her style as eclectic and quirky, with a classic touch and believes clothing should be able to be worn for multiple seasons. When selecting for her store she looks for timeless pieces made of the best fabric. . .and searches out European Designers or American Designers with European roots.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Black Halo. It's been on my style radar for a while. . .I always like the designs. . .but I've never paid too much attention to it. Which is strange really, because Black Halo designs have a tendency to grace magazine covers on a monthly basis. This season Black Halo is now one of my favorite Collections! What I love most about Black Halo is that their designs combine a classic look, with a sexy flair, and interesting detailing. Their pieces are timeless, without being boring.

Without further adieu. . .I present to you. . .my obsession for Spring. One of my MUST HAVES for the season.

Black Halo Camilla Shift Dress.

I LOVE the classic shape of this dress, yet the interesting ruffle detailing around the neck and bust. Even more I love the beautiful powder blue color, contrasted with the red skinny belt! PERFECTION!

This dress is the perfect addition for any closet because of it's timeless characteristics. This is sure to be worn for seasons to come!

So who can wear this dress? This dress is certainly a figure conscious one. . .and you can bet I'll definitely be throwing a pair of Spanx under this one! Believe it or not though, this dress will work for a variety of figures.

An hourglass figure would obviously be a knock out in the dress, but be careful the dress hugs the curves just right. . .just not too tight! Hourglass figures have to be careful, because their body shape screams sex appeal. . .although a little sexy is good. . .you don't want to come across as a full on sex kitten!

If you are more of a pear shape, this dress can be flattering as well. . .just make SURE it's not too tight across the rear. . .consider going up a size from your norm. The volume in the chest and shoulders can help to balance a pear shape.

This would also be flattering on someone with a tall, strait figure. The belt and the volume in the chest help to add some shape to a strait frame. Equally, even if you are on the short side, the high-waist on this dress will help to visually elongate the legs. If you are on the short side have the dress hemmed just above the knee to make your legs look even longer.

I think I will have to find some room in my closet for this one this Spring!

Alexandria the Great

I spent the holidays in Washington, DC visiting my boyfriend and his family. Saturday my boyfriend and I went to Old Town Alexandria, just outside of DC for the day. I fell in love.

Old Town Alexandria has an abundance of charm, culture and places to explore! King Street, the main street in Alexandria starts at the Potomac River Waterfront, and goes inward toward downtown Alexandria. Along King Street you can find unique boutiques, antique stores, restaurants, salons. . .and strangely enough. . .several wig stores! Above the store fronts are gorgeous condos and town homes for Old Town residents.

We went for the day. . .but Alexandria is the PERFECT place for a weekend away! There is SO much to do, that one day just isn't enough. Wake up and have breakfast on the waterfront, explore King Street and catch a movie. Try taking the free trolley around to see more, or ride around in a horse drawn carriage ride!

While we didn't have the time to do that, I DID find a 2 GREAT boutiques you have to stop by!

The first one is An American in Paris. Owner Joelle Solimano moved to Alexandria from the South of France 15 years ago, and opened her store 10 years ago. It is truly a unique find. Joelle spoke with me for a while about her fashion sense, how she selects pieces for her store, and some her favorite pieces. Look for more on An American in Paris tomorrow!

After leaving An American in Paris we continued up King Street and found a charming little family owned Italian restaurant called Pines of Florence. It was real, home style Italian food! I love small, family owned places. They have so much charm, and are usually better than chain restaurants! I had the Chicken Francese, and my boyfriend had the Eggplant Parm. . .both were amazing! Be sure to save room for a Cannoli!

On the way back to the car, we stumbled across a Gentleman's boutique called Dash's. Owned by Victor Dash, Dash's is truly a unique find. It is not often you find such a captivating men's boutique. Dash's carries mostly Italian made suits, ties, cashmere sweaters, coats and scarves! It reminded me of an old English boutique, and the window display is captivating. I learned quite a bit from Mr. Dash as well, so check back to see pictures and read more!

I can't wait to go back and explore more of Alexandria! I know I have a lot of DC readers. . .so if you have a favorite spot in Alexandria leave a comment about it so others can visit it!

9 New Trends for 2009!

A New Year means a lot of New Trends in fashion . . . and out with some old trends. Here are my top predictions for fashion in 2009! I'm listing them now, and look for expanded entries about each trend over the coming weeks. . .with more detail and examples.

2009 Trend #1: RED -- I believe that RED will be a hot color for 2009. Starting off in the Spring as a Fuchsia Red. . .and transforming into more of a Brick Red for the Fall.

2009 Trend #2: Bold Accessories -- Accessories were bold this fall, but expect even more over-the-top jewelry and shoes for 2009. The bigger the better with jewelry, and watch for overly ornate, statement shoes as well.

2009 Trend #3: Decorative zippers -- no more hidden zippers; now zippers are used as a decorative detail. From exposed, to contrasting fabric trim, zippers will be a focal point for the back of shirts as well as dresses.

2009 Trend #4: High Waisted -- I know this was a trend in 2008, however it is taking a change for 2009. Instead of tight high-waisted skirts, pants and shorts - the trend is shifting towards loose, voluminous bottoms that are belted at the waist.

2009 Trend #5: Structured Mini-Skirts -- Hemlines are short for spring. . .but a tight mini-skirt is out. This Spring the mini-skirt is all about volume and structure, made of heavier fabrics which hold their shape.

2009 Trend #6: Ruffles, Tucks and Pleats -- Detailing will add interest to clothing. Look for details such as large ruffles, pin-tucking and pleats.

2009 Trend #7: Oversize floral prints -- Large floral prints were noticeable on the runway this season. Look for large floral prints on skirts, dresses and blouses this season.

2009 Trend #8: 70's Inspired -- Look for 70's inspired colors, shapes and fabrics in clothing this year.

2009 Trend #9: Rompers -- Rompers and jumpers graced the runway for Spring. . .and can be a VERY difficult look to pull off. Remember, just because it's a trend. . .doesn't mean it's for you!

Rants, Raves and Red Soles

I'll start with the Raves from my day. . .which would be that Saks Fifth Avenue is currently having a FANTASTIC sale! Currently almost all reduced items are an additional 50% off! This is a perfect time to score a DVF Wrap Dress for less that $100. . .just make sure that the item is something you can hold on to for a while! Check out some of my favorite finds for under $100 below!

Now on to my Rants. . .although I was thoroughly impressed with the sales at Saks today, I will say that I was UNIMPRESSED with their customer service skills! This is the second time I have visited the Saks store at Tysons Galleria in McLean, Virginia and not received any help from a sales person! I was in the store for 25 minutes, weighted down by clothes across 3 different departments, and not ONE salesperson approached me! When I'm paying Saks Fifth Avenue prices, I expect a little respect and help from the sales department!

And now. . .the Red Soles! This was the single best moment of my shopping experience (followed by sadness as they were the wrong size!) I stumbled across the most glorious pair of Christian Louboutin Yoyospina shoes (size 37) on sale for $150!!!! Yes, you read that right, Louboutin's for under $200!!! If they hadn't been peep toe, I seriously might have cut off my toes to fit them in the shoes! The sales lady searched the Saks system and no other Saks in country had these shoes in my size! (38.5 or 39) :(

I managed to find this pair on EBAY. . .but they aren't quite my size. . .and are still $375! Anyone that knows me knows that Louboutins are my FAVORITE! Look for a post later this week about me getting to MEET Mr. Louboutin and having him sign a pair of my shoes!!!!! (all time best day ever!)

Shopping the Holiday Sales!

It's back to work after the busy holidays. . .and for me. . .this means battling the massive crowds at the mall! The struggling economy is also making this year the BEST for after Christmas sales! Every store I have been in has had amazing sales, plus additional percentages off! But don't fall into the trap of impulse buying. . .and don't get overwhelmed by crowds and messy racks.

Here are a few tips to help make your shopping trip a little easier from parking to checking out:

1. Wear comfortable clothes: this doesn't mean to show up in pajamas. . .but choose casual jeans, flats and a sweater. Make things simple to change in and out of to make trying on clothes easier.

2. Avoid parking decks: parking decks are a mad house around the holidays. . .instead try to find a parking spot in one of the outside lots near a department store.

3. Leave your coat in the car: prepare for stores to be hot and crowded, a coat is just an extra layer to have to hold onto. Suck it up for the walk into the mall, and you will be glad to not have to keep up with a bulky coat.

4. Pack a snack: The food court will be a zoo during sale season, so be sure to pack a protein bar to hold off any hunger pains! Also be sure to pack a bottle of water to stay hydrated in the heated stores!

5. Remain Calm: Don't get overwhelmed by crowded stores and messy racks. Take your time and tune out the crowds. Also, don't be discouraged by long lines for the fitting room or cash register. They tend to move pretty quick.

6. Website shop: check out websites of stores before you shop to get an idea of some items you might be looking for!

7. Don't get sucked in: Don't buy something just because it is on sale. If it is something you have been waiting to go on sale, buy it. Otherwise stick to items that you can wear now as well as into Spring.

8. Know upcoming trends: By knowing what will be popular next season you can score some great sale items that you can wear longer. Check back later this week for my thoughts on what will be big for Spring!

New Years for any budget!

Top designers set the trends for each coming season. Lesser known, mass producing designers then pull from these looks to create their collections. Although the designer look is typically more favorable than the cheaper creation, most budgets don't allow for designer wear. Here we have The Look, and The Look for Less - New Years Edition!

THE LOOK

New Years: The Look by thestylemaison

COST: approx. $32,000

Using this STUNNING Zac Posen Dress as inspiration, I created a beautiful look, coming in at top dollar. Even without the jewelry, this look still comes in at around $4000.

The detailing on the dress draws the eye in and up to the face. I LOVE the way this dress hugs the body and creates interest. I selected this winter white Fendi coat as a good compliment with its sleek, clean lines. By selecting accessories that are bold, but not overbearing, the overall look is very chic and is sure to get a lot of attention on New Years!

THE LOOK FOR LESS

New Years: The Look For Less by thestylemaison

COST: approx. $630

This look is a great alternative to the previous, and much more budget friendly! The dress has many of the same characteristics as the Posen dress, pulling the eye in and to the face. Similarly, this coat has chic, clean lines and a hidden zipper so as to not compete with the dress. I'm a little iffy on this clutch, and may suggest a metallic fabric bag as an alternative. The shoes add a little sparkle, without being too overbearing! Wear this look with confidence New Years Eve and you are sure to win Best Dressed!

Although my favorite is obviously the more expensive look, the second look is beautiful too! If you budget allows, of course splurge on the first look, at least the dress and coat. However, most of us don't have an extra $4000 laying around for one night. The second look is beautiful too, and you will be SURE to turn a lot of heads when you walk in the door!

Posh Perfection

Victoria Beckham has become a fashion icon for the world, a walking advertisement of fashion perfection. Although some may criticize her shockingly thin frame, in my opinion Victoria Beckham (VB) is the epitome of style. In a world where jeans are quickly becoming accepted everywhere from the office to a cocktail party, VB runs around town in pencil skirts, 5 inch stiletto's and a matching Hermes Bag.

On a recent trip to Milan with hubby David Beckham, VB managed to change into 3 equally glamorous outfits in a matter of 15 hours. These weren't just any outfits, but the latest looks from her dVb collection, ranging in price from $1000 to $3000.

Outfit number 2 is a stunning strapless dress paired with simple accessories. I love the detailing around the hips of this dress! Although, it is certainly only meant for someone with Posh's perfect proportions!

I am all about faux fur this season, and VB, an avid PETA supporter, sports a chic black faux fur bolero to complete her look.

Taking every detail into account when dressing her small frame, VB chooses beautifully tailored, form fitting, classic pieces and pairs them with stunning accessories. Most importantly VB takes risks in her clothes, not always choosing the best outfit, but that is what defines a true fashionista.

Copy Posh's look by choosing silhouettes that flatter your frame and that are timeless pieces. Build upon it with chunky bangles and chic black leather gloves (which I love love love for winter!) Finish the look with a structured bag and sky high heels.

Typically around Christmas most stores have extended holiday hours. . .opening at 7am and closing at midnight. This year Macy's is taking it to a whole new level by staying open 24 hours a day, Friday, December 19 until Christmas Eve! While I'm not so keen on the idea of shopping in the wee hours of the morning, this would be a great way to avoid the holiday crowds.

Call your local Macy's to make sure that they are one of the stores participating in the 24 hour schedule before showing up at 3am ready to shop!

A void in Bryant Park this Spring

Every Spring and Fall celebrities, journalists and fashionistas flock to New York's Bryant Park for Fashion Week. Originally called Press Week, NYC Fashion Week began in 1943 as a small event for journalists, and has grown since then into an international event drawing thousands of people to the tents each year. Shows range from those of top American designers to newer up and coming designers. Between lighting, staging and accessories each fashion show runs up a bill of $100K to $200K +!

It looks as if the economy has hit even the best of the fashion designers; recently Betsey Johnson, Carmen Marc Valvo and Vera Wang have all announced that they will not be showing at this Springs New York Fashion Week. Instead they will be holding a smaller, private show consisting of a guest list of 100 to 150 people.

This is a great loss for Brant Park this year, as all 3 of these designers draw a large crowd. Betsey Johnson's shows are known for their quarky, light-hearted feel; always pushing the boundaries of fashion. Let's hope things improve by the Fall, or we may see even more designers pulling out of the shows!

I just stumbled across the most amazing game at Shop Intuition: The Fashion Rule's Game. Created by the Margaret Maldonado Agency, The Fashion Rules Game tests the players knowledge about what is happening, past and present, in the world of fashion, celebrity and design. This very well could be the Monopoly for fashionistas! Hopefully Santa will bring me this for Christmas!

According to Shop Intuition's website: " This fashion trivia board game will delight fashionistas and style tyros alike. Fashion rules is a unique, fast paced, smart board game built around the love of all things relating to style. The board game tests player's knowledge what's happening, past and present, in the world of fashion, celebrity, design. Glitz, Glamour, SPARKLE!!

New Years Eve is just 2 weeks away, and many of my friends are still looking for that perfect outfit! For many, New Years Eve is the one time a year to dress up and go a little above and beyond any other night of the year.

New Years 2009 - Glitz, Glamour, SPARKLE! by thestylemaison

This is the perfect look for any New Years occasion - from cocktail party, to dinner, to Times Square. Equally, this look is flattering to various figures! The ruffling in the top and the sequin shoes pull from two major style trends, without competing with one another. The simple color pallet allows all of the elements to flow together and the faux fur bolero is a chic, animal friendly, addition which completes this look!

Sequins have been popular this season, so New Years Eve definitely calls for some sparkle! Clothing this season comes with just a little sparkle, to full on sequins! Whichever you choose, follow these simple rules. . no. . . guidelines, to prevent a fashion disaster!

1. Lean toward sequins in Black, Gold or Silver. Wearing a skirt with hot pink sequins may be a little to 1980's disaster than chic and on trend.

2. Don't over-do it. If you choose a sequined top, pair it with a structured skirt or pant in a heavy fabric to balance the look.

3. Try incorporating a luxurious material, such as silk or velvet. Steer clear of cheap, stretchy fabrics which will make your outfit look cheap instead of chic.

DONT: do sequins head to toe!

5. Remember Coco Chanel's Rule: Before leaving the house take a look in the mirror and remove one item. This will prevent you from looking over-done or too costume-y!

Holiday Cheer - Purple

Purple had definitely been THE color for the Fall/Winter 09 Season. . . and it just so happens to be on of my favorite colors! I love the richness of the color, and how it compliments almost any skin tone. I have always loved purple and silver together for the holiday season. . .so I have selected some of my favorite pieces for holiday gatherings this year.

Be bold with a purple dress, or more subtle by using purple to accessorize your outfit. When accessorizing a purple dress try to pair it with metallic silver or gold that will make the dress pop, instead of black which is too close in color. Grey is also another beautiful compliment to purple, try grey boots or a grey coat.

My absolute favorite is the Victoria's Secret Sweater Dress in the center. I love the sexy draping in the back, it takes a sweater dress to a new level. I also think the purple Silk Top from Banana Republic is beautiful for an office party or holiday dinner!

The best news about purple is that it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Shades of lavender are popping up in new lines for Spring, and Tracy Reese's new spring collection is full of splashes of purple!

Holiday Cheer - Red

Do you have a holiday work party to go to? Maybe a cocktail party, or Christmas Eve dinner?

Typically when I am looking for an outfit for an event, I know what color I want to wear, and set out to find something that works. We all know that when you are looking for something you can never find it. . .so I thought I would post some ideas of holiday attire by color! Keep checking back over the next day or two and I will post all of my favorite findings for this years holiday soiree's!

As a general rule, I like to steer clear of wearing red to holiday parties. . .it's much too cliche and expected. This year is the exception to that rule. Red is my predicted "must have" color for Fall/Winter 2010. . .so in anticipation, I will be wearing it throughout this winter season.

Welcome to The Style Maison Blog! I am Lauryn Prattes, creator of thestylemaison.com (which is a work in progress, I hope to launch by mid-January!)

My goal for The Style Maison and The Style Maison Blog is to help share my knowledge of fashion and style with you, my reader. Some of you may be budding fashionistas, others may have no fashion knowledge at all. I want to offer something for everyone, every lifestyle and every budget.

A little bit about myself. . . .I love travel and studied in Paris for a summer, as well as traveled to London and Greece. I also completed an internship at Saks Fifth Avenue, learning the in's and out's of clothing, fashion and styling. Currently I am living in Atlanta and working as a personal fashion stylist.
